Wind Power Plants Require Careful Planning

Wind farms may have an impact on local weather patterns. As environmental engineers have discovered, wind turbines create a lot of turbulence in their wake, mixing air up and down with effects that can be detected for miles. But more efficient rotors may significantly reduce this problem.

DURHAM, N.C.–You’ve seen the prices at the pump go up and now home heating costs are on the rise. And scientists are looking to the wind for a much needed alternative to fuel.

They’re the things that fuel our lives, but what fuels them is running low. Scientists may have found an answer with wind farms. Somnath Baidya Roy, from the department of civil and environmental engineering at Duke University in Durham, N.C., says, “It’s very clear to everybody that we have to move away from conventional fossil fuels like coal and oil and look at alternatives.”

With a new power source comes an impact to our environment. Roy says, “Large wind farms can significantly affect local meteorology.” He studied these massive machines and believes wind farms can actually impact our weather because wind turns the blades of the turbine around a rotor, which helps generate electricity the blades create a lot of turbulence in the wake.

Roy says, “It’s something like the wake from the propeller of a boat. Now this added turbulences mixes air up and down and creates a warming and drying effect near the ground.” He says the affects can be felt for miles and could have an impact on air conditioning costs and more money may have to be spent on irrigation of nearby crops.

He believes the solution is simple — create better rotors. “We found that low-turbulence rotors are more economically efficient, they tend to generate more electricity than conventional rotors,” he says.

Wind farms tend to impact the weather more at night, which is when the wind is usually stronger and the most energy is generated.

BACKGROUND: Wind farms are growing in popularity as an alternative energy source, but an increasing number of critics are concerned about possible negative impacts on local weather. Researchers at Duke and Princeton Universities used computer modeling to determine any possible adverse impacts of a large wind farm in the Great Plains region.

WHAT THEY FOUND: Large groups of power-generating windmills could have a small influence on a region’s climate. All large wind turbines disrupt natural airflow to extract energy from wind. During the day, the effects from the disturbed airflow are negligible, since natural turbulence mixes the lower layers of the atmosphere. But the researchers found that in the predawn hours, when the atmosphere is less turbulent, a large windmill array could influence the local climate, raising temperatures by about 2 degrees Celsius (about 4 Fahrenheit) for several hours. The rotating blades could also redirect high-speed winds down to the Earth’s surface, boosting evaporation of soil moisture.

Video Gaming Companies Start Luring Girls

Teenage boys have always been the core demographic of the video game market. According to Wedbush Morgan, almost all gamers in America had been men, 18 to 34 years old.

That was five years ago. Games exclusively kowtowing to testosterones are making way for wider appeal.

Universality is now the sales pitch of the $18-billion video game industry in the US. Companies like Nintendo Co., Ubisoft Entertainment SA, and Electronic Arts Inc. are in a dash to make games alluring to both genders and every other demographic.

Living up to its fearless declaration that “Anyone can be a gamer,” Nintendo Co. has already sold 10 million Wii gaming consoles in the US to date. Selling for $250 apiece, the consoles are for Nintendo’s popular mass-market games like Wii Music and Wii Play.

From the creator of The Sims comes EA’s Spore, which lets gamers create imaginary creatures. They can be exhibited on the game’s website, which so far has hosted 1.9 million creaturestrumping real species in number.

If anything, girls are muscling in. In its latest fiscal report, Ubisoft attributed over $350 million in global sales to casual games, now a separate division of the company. “Casual” includes “girly” games like Horse Riders and Imagine.

For all its ramifications, such industry trendculturallydoes not so much reflect intrepidness as convention. Since time immemorial, girls have relatively been allowed to channel men, but not always so the other way around. Besides, Halo 3 won’t probably be exclusively played by girls soon.

A Tale Of Two Restaurants

Charles Dickens began his book with the famous phrase, “It was the best of times and the worst of times.”

This applies to restaurants and to a lot of businesses, for that matter.

They can have great food or wonderful products that you’re drawn to, but their customer service repulses you.

So, you use them, time and again, but you feel queasy about it, and far less than 100% satisfied.

This is my experience with a seafood company in Santa Monica, California.

It’s in a key location, parking is plentiful, and the food is good.

But their rules are utterly insane.

For example, if you walk in and there are plenty of open tables, no one is waiting, and there are no imminent reservations that are going to show up, they’ll still make you wait up to fifteen minutes to be seated.

The other day, I asked “Why?”

“We want to give our waiters a chance to catch up.”

“To catch up with what?” I wondered. Believe me, these slugs are not overworked.

If you want a nice open booth near a window, they won’t let you have it unless you’re so insistent that it spoils your appetite.

The logic?

They just gave the server in that part of the place another party, so they’d prefer to seat you in the cave like darkness in the rear to give another server some business.

Why not let that underserved server serve you in that nice booth?

Today, I saw crawlers, bug-like beings in the lettuce that accompanied my Oysters Rockefeller.

I summoned the waiter, who said he’d speak to the manager.

In a few minutes the waiter came back and said: “They’re not bugs, they’re sea shrimp, and my manager says they’re always on oysters.”

Later, I summoned the manager and said, “I want to meet the manager who says bugs on food are normal.”

He reiterated the sea shrimp tale, but added, “We try to wash them off, and the wholesaler says they can’t get them all off before we get them.”

“Change wholesalers!” I thought.

He removed them (the oysters, not sea shrimp) from the tab.

I’m interested in hearing the health department’s take on these beings.

Anyway, wouldn’t it be nice if places like this could put a stop to their schizophrenia, purvey great food and great service, and eliminate the bull along with the other critters?

Email Marketing Manners 101: Clearing Your Inbox By Forwarding Email Messages To Someone Else

This week I received an email message entitled to Stephen. Since my name isn’t Stephen, and I am not even a guy, it got my attention. Seems that a well-meaning customer service rep at a company I deal with decided that the way to answer my help request was to pawn me off on someone else.

I understand that one person at a company can’t do everything but what are you really saying when:

*You receive an external help request from someone who deals with your company and you

*Deal with it by sending an internal message to another employee who can take care of the issue and

*Carbon copy the internal message to the customer who sent you the help request

Does that mean you are off the hook?

Am I the only person who thinks this is super rude?

Am I the only person who thinks that a customer might be:

1. A bit confused when they get an email from someone they don’t recognize?

2. A bit confused when they get an email clearly addressed to another person?

I think the customer would feel pawned off and not appreciated.

Even worse, they just might delete the message because it is addressed to someone else (thinking it is Spam).

My story does not end there. My issue has not been resolved! Do I email the customer service email again, or do I email ‘Stephen’, the guy that I think is taking care of my issue because I was cc’d on an internal email conversation?

Maybe it would have been better if the customer service rep had emailed me and told me the issue was being taken care, and she would leave the request open until the issue had been solved.

I don’t like getting emails that clearly indicate I have been pawned off.

I also don’t like getting called Stephen.

And I really don’t like being clueless as to the status of my issue.

Customers don’t need to know who is taking care of what in your company. They need a response that indicates you care about their issue and it will be resolved. Next time you think it is appropriate to simply ‘clean out your inbox’ by pawning off an external help request to someone else in your company, think about how the customer will feel when they get a strange email addressed to someone else.

Using Email requires manners and a little thinking about how the recipient will feel when they get your message. If email manners are an issue for you than admit it, and use the telephone.
